The two winners of October’s municipal election were sworn into office during Tuesday night’s regular meeting of the Assembly. They will replace Jack Ozment and Reber Stein.

After Christianson and Blake took their seats at the Assembly table, a recess was called until tonight.

That’s because there’s still no winner in the race to be mayor of Sitka.  The Assembly certified the election results from every part of Sitka’s municipal ballot except the results of the mayoral election.

They can do that if they have a specific reason. In this case, the reason is Tuesday’s violent weather, which prevented planes from landing in Sitka, including the planes carrying U.S. Mail. That mail might contain absentee ballots postmarked before the October 5th deadline, and with a margin of just three votes, those ballots could determine Sitka’s next mayor.

The Assembly can only delay the certification of election results on a day-to-day basis, and only for three days.  The meeting will be called back to order tonight at 6 p.m., at which point the Assembly will decide whether to certify the mayoral election results, or whether to postpone for another day.
