SITKA, ALASKA
Weir was also an emergency medical technician and worked with Sitka’s first responders.
Kidd says that the loss of a park ranger reminds everyone what a small community the service really is.
“I think people would describe parks as families in many ways. And when people wear what Park Service people term the ‘green and the gray’ it’s a pretty small group and they feel this loss particularly acutely because of that.”
Weir had served in twelve different national parks in her career, including some of the system’s most famous: Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Denali.
Kidd says Weir was also an artist, and took advantage of her time in Sitka to study with Tommy Joseph in his evening carving group. Weir was on her way to some interim training in Nebraska on February 24th when the accident occurred. She reportedly died at the scene. Weir had just been assigned to serve in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park.
