Skaters with the Sitka Sound Slayers, the local roller derby team, shared their goals for the 2015 “United We Roll” Alaska State Tournament. This is the Slayers first visit to the tournament, which is May 15th – 17th at the MTA Sports Center in Palmer, Alaska. Ten teams are scheduled to compete. The Slayers are especially looking forward to bouting the #1 ranked Rage City Rollergirls , the only WFTDA certified team in the state of Alaska.
Cori Schumejda, Michelle Turner, and Sarah Newhouse (aka ValKori, Ivanna GetOnYa, and Risky Mistress) talked about how far their team has come and why they joined. One year ago, they had their first bout with another team (the Juneau Rollergirls) and lost. They went on to win their next three bouts.
The Slayers are hosting a recruitment night for interested skaters, referees, scorekeepers, and volunteers on Wednesday, May 20th at 6pm at the Bayview Pub.
