The Sitka School Board will have a full deck to draw from, when it selects a new member Monday night (9-21-15).

Seven applicants have put in their names for the vacancy created by the resignation of Lon Garrison this summer, including two doctors, a former hospital board member, two former assembly members, and one former mayor.

The school board will meet in special session at 6 PM Monday (Sep 21) to make an appointment. An executive session is scheduled, in the event a candidate prefers to have his or her nomination discussed behind closed doors.

The seven people who have submitted letters of interest are:

Paul Bahna is a medical doctor and professor of Biology at UAS. Bahna formerly served on the board of Sitka Community Hospital.
Jennifer McNichol is also a doctor, at SEARHC.
Valorie Nelson is a long-time employee of the US Forest Service, and a former assembly member and mayor of Sitka.
Thor Christianson is also a former member of the Sitka assembly. His wife is a first-grade teacher.
Christy Anderson is a former teacher at Blatchley, who’s served an administrative internship at Keet Gooshi Heen.
Loyd Patson is a social worker, and a former employee of Sheldon Jackson College who’s recently returned to Sitka with his wife, the new pastor at St. Peter’s.
Brian Richardson is a former Americorps Volunteer who now works full time at Youth Advocates of Sitka.

The successful candidate will serve the one year remaining in Lon Garrison’s term, until the municipal election in 2016.
