Assembly member Ben Miyasato has announced that he will not be running for his seat in the October election. Miyasato announced his decision at Tuesday night’s (03-08-16) assembly meeting.

Speaking to the Assembly, he said, “I think that will free me up to be able to say things that need to be said, and at the same time, I want to see people step up. I know there’s a lot of people out who have opinions who have also good ideas.”

Miyasato was elected to the Assembly in 2013 and continues to serve on Sitka’s Tribal Council.

During his remarks, Miyasato put out a call to action, encouraging Sitkans to serve on local commissions. Currently, there are two vacancies on the Library Commission and three vacancies on the Parks and Recreation Commission. During the meeting, the Assembly appointed Steve Clayton and Ryan Wilson to terms on the Building Department Appeals Board.

The Assembly also renewed the liquor license for The Pilot House Inc. The license was previously held by Fly In Fish Inn, Inc., which operated as a 10-room inn and restaurant by the same name.

In 2015, Fly In Fish Inn filed for Chapter 11  Bankruptcy and is currently proposing a plan of reorganization to pay back creditors and keep the business alive. In his application, owner Ken Bellows said he will work to transfer the license from The Pilot House to Fly In Fish Inn if required by the Alaska Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office.
