A Sitka man is facing three felony charges for breaking into Harry Race Pharmacy last November.
A Sitka Grand Jury on Friday indicted Derek R. Baird, age 28, for burglary in the second degree, after he allegedly entered the pharmacy after it was closed. He was also charged with misconduct involving a controlled substance in the fourth degree for possessing hydrocodone and misconduct involving weapons in the third degree for having a Remington 870 shotgun with the serial numbers filed off.
According to police, Baird broke the glass back door of Harry Race to get inside on Nov. 18th and subsequently cut his arm. He allegedly stole a box of syringes, which led police to believe the burglary was drug-related.
Police asked for the public’s help in trying to find the suspect. The department released a short video clip of the man, clad in dark clothes and a ski mask, walking through the pharmacy. They eventually linked Baird to the crime by sending a blood sample from the scene to the state crime lab.
Baird is in custody pending $10,000 bail.
