Three people have applied for an open seat on the Sitka School Board.

They are Brent Edwards, an attorney and stay-at-home father, Jennifer Carter, a Sitka Fine Arts Camp instructor, and Dionne Brady-Howard, a teacher at Mount Edgecumbe High School.

Superintendent Mary Wegner said the appointee will serve about a year.

“Our policy is that they would serve until the next opportunity to be on the municipal election [ballot], which would be October of 2017,” she said.

The deadline for applications was 4 p.m. today (9-23-16).

Wegner said the school board will interview each candidate in a public meeting, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the district office boardroom.

“They will have some specific questions that they’ll be asking. Typically it has to do with our school board goals, previous involvement in the district, think of that nature,” she said.

The appointee will replace Tim Fulton, who left the board at the beginning of this month. He said he needed to spend more time caring for his aging parents out-of-state.

His resignation came too late to put the board seat on the Oct. 4 municipal ballot.
