The past two weeks have been very busy for bear calls in Sitka. Wildlife troopers even made the difficult decision to shoot a sow and her two cubs when they cached food in a Sitka neighborhood. This activity, plus all the human-bear conflict over the summer, has created the impression that bears and people play on opposing teams in this environment.
Local naturalist Hugh Bevan operates a number of trail cams in the forests and estuaries around Sitka. This video, Through the Portal, contains some of his best clips from this fall. It’s an excellent reminder that all animals — even humans — thrive here.
