A Sitka driver is recovering from minor injuries after colliding with a light pole Tuesday morning (5-30-17).
Sitka police were notified of the accident on the 1500 block of Halibut Point Road shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday. Lt. Lance Ewers says officers found the 1997 blue and gray Ford Ranger overturned at the side of the road.
“The vehicle went through a decorative stump. It completely severed the power pole, completely severed it. The vehicle went through a person’s bushes and actually hit another person’s Toyota Tacoma, totally destroying his blue Ford pick-up truck.”
The collision left the parked Toyota with extensive damage and the Ford upside down. The driver of the Ford was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. He was transported to Sitka Community Hospital for medical attention.
“He was treated at the hospital for minor injuries because the airbags did their job, which did deploy and he was wearing a seat belt.”
Ewers says that the accident is being investigated as a possible Driving Under the Influence. There is no information yet from the state DOT on when the pole will be repaired.
