Lieutenant Governor Byron Mallott was at Mount Edgecumbe High School in Sitka today, hearing from students about the issues that matter most to them. It was a rare chance for students to meet with state leadership, on a day that holds significance. Mallott is here for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the first year the holiday is legally and permanently recognized by the state of Alaska, replacing Columbus Day. And tonight, at University of Alaska Southeast, Mallott will sign a formal resolution declaring Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Sitka.
