The Sitka Jazz Festival is February 1st through 3rd, drawing artists of all ages to teach master classes to Sitka students and come together for evening concerts. The festival begins tonight (02-01-18) with an opening concert by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. at the Odess Theater on the Sitka Fine Arts Campus.
Saxophonist and pianist Brian Hogans spoke with KCAW’s Brooke Schafer about growing up in a military family, picking up an instrument at a young age, and touring with musical groups around the world. On Saturday (02-03-18), Hogans will teach master classes at Sitka High School on how to practice jazz and how to swing while playing an instrument.
