The City of Sitka has scheduled a 4-hour outage at Sitka High School on Sunday (03-11-18) to replace equipment.

The outage will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. In that time, the city’s electric department will replace a rusted portion of a transformer.

Superintendent Mary Wegner said that teachers have been notified. Sitka’s basketball team, cheer squad, and pep band are in Ketchikan for a regional basketball tournament and there is nothing on the calendar for Sunday morning, suggesting the building will be largely empty during the outage.

Some Sitkans did experience an unplanned outage earlier this week, when 15 residents on Dodge Circle lost power Wednesday night (03-07-18).

A piece of electrical infrastructure failed and the power went out at 5:49 p.m. Electric crews restored power to those customers at 6:57 p.m.

As far as outages go, this winter’s outages have been fewer and shorter than in winter’s past.
