A film about the consequences of plastic pollution will be screened on Friday, April 19th at 7 p.m. in room 106 at the University of Alaska Southeast. “A Plastic Ocean” features explorers Craig Leeson and Tanya Streeter. The local screening will be followed by a panel discussion with local biologists, fishermen, and environmentalists.
“I really think 10-15 years from now, we’re going to be talking about plastics the way we talk about cigarettes and tobacco. We’re going to be saying, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize how bad that was for me and the environment.’ We’re going to start regulating it,” Putz said.
Michelle Putz with Bags for Change talks about plastic debris in Sitka’s waters and offers tips for reducing plastic use. Her group will be collecting and distributing clean reusable bags during the screening. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cups and plates. Light refreshments will be provided. Contact Putz at 747-2708 for more information.
