Two Sitka organizations received email bomb threats this week amid a wave of similar incidents across the state and country.

According to a press release from the Sitka Police Department, a local faith-based organization received an email on Wednesday (1-3-24)  stating that there were explosives inside the church that were set to detonate. Police said the same email was sent to other faith-based organizations in the state.

On Thursday (1-4-24), police said that the Sheldon-Jackson Museum had also received an emailed bomb threat. Again, police said the email was sent to multiple museums across the state.

In both cases, officers searched the grounds and found no evidence of an imminent threat. Police said they will be informing the FBI of the threat.

The Alaska State Capitol and a Juneau church also received emailed bomb threats this week. On Wednesday, NPR reported a wave of bomb threats at State capitols across the country. The FBI said in a written statement to NPR that, “while we have no information to indicate a specific and credible threat, we will continue to work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.”
