A small rock slide occurred on Sawmill Creek Road early Monday morning (2-12-24), damaging the concrete partition between the hillside and the highway, and temporarily closing the road.
A photo posted to Facebook by the Alaska Department of Transportation shows several large boulders in the road near the mile 5 marker. The boulders were cleared out of the area, but due to continuing rockfall activity, DOT closed a section of the road to non-essential traffic until their geotechnical team could “evaluate the situation.” They re-opened the road shortly before 9 a.m.
KCAW has reached out to the Alaska DOT for more information.
