A Sitka man was rescued Sunday, after badly injuring his leg in an ATV accident in Appleton Cove, about 30 miles north of Sitka.

In a news release, the Coast Guard says it received a phone call from a man reporting that his 21-year old son was injured while on an ATV trip with his brother.

The brothers activated an SOS using their InReach device, which allowed Air Station Sitka to launch a helicopter and fly directly to the site of the accident. The crew lowered a rescue swimmer through the forest canopy to aid the victim, who was loaded into a  litter that was then hoisted aboard the helicopter.

The man was returned to Sitka and transferred to EMS personnel, who transported him to the Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center for treatment.

On Saturday, the Coast Guard assisted five people on a disabled fishing vessel near Sitka. District headquarters in Juneau relayed a report from Sitka Dispatch that the 35-foot fishing vessel Kari Ann was disabled, unable to drop anchor, and drifting toward rocks in Western Channel. A Coast Guard small-crew response vessel and marine safety team, currently assigned to Sitka from Seattle, responded to assist the Kari Ann, and towed it to Allen Marine.
