Rep. Mary Peltola, on the campaign trail for a second full term as Alaska’s lone member of the US House of Representatives, met with about 100 Sitkans during a whistlestop tour of Southeast this week (8-5-24). Peltola has been elected twice to the US House of Representatives — first in a special election to serve out the term of longtime Rep. Don Young who died unexpectedly in 2022, and again in that year’s regular election for a full term of her own. Peltola is a Democrat, but has broken with her party’s caucus on several high profile issues, including support for drilling in the Arctic, and opposition to some gun control measures (becoming the first Democrat in the House to win an endorsement from the National Rifle Association since 2020).

Eleven other candidates are seeking the seat: Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, is running under the Republican banner with an endorsement from former President Donald Trump; Nick Begich, also a Republican (from a family of noteworthy Democrats), is returning to challenge Peltola. The congressional primary election is August 20, with early voting open through August 19 (see your community’s early voting location below). The top four candidates will advance to the Alaska general election on November 5, 2024, when voters will also choose the next President of the United States.
