The Sitka Fire Department responded to a small boat fire by Sitka Sound Seafoods early Friday morning (8-9-24).

Around 1:45 a.m. a dock worker observed a fire on a tender, and called 911. A fire engine and four personnel responded. Before they could arrive, the crew managed to put out the blaze with water and an extinguisher. The call was canceled en-route.

In an interview with KCAW, Assistant Fire Chief David Johnson said it’s likely the exhaust area of the boat had overheated, catching some nearby wood on fire. He recommended that boaters keep combustible materials away from exhaust.
