Despite the outage, a Sitka search and rescue ended successfully.

A woman first reported missing in Sitka on Thursday has been found safe. Sitka Police and Alaska Troopers first reported 28-year-old Olivia Magni was last seen on Tuesday around noon at the south end of the Katlian Bay Road looking for her lost dog.

Alaska Wildlife Trooper Kyle Ferguson said over 40 people searched for Magni between Thursday and Friday morning (8-30-24).

“Folks from Sitka Search and Rescue, the Sitka Fire Department, the search and rescue dog team, Sitka PD, Juneau Mountain Rescue, Juneau Sea Dogs, the local United States Forest Service, Alaska State Parks, Coast Guard, and then citizen volunteers as well,” he said. “And this mission, this search and rescue, really exemplifies the outstanding work that’s possible with search and rescue dog teams. They were really instrumental in bringing them to a successful conclusion, so we’re very thankful for them.”

Ferguson says it’s important to always have a plan before going on a hike.

“It’s important to file a float plan or have somebody to check in with, and then also have some equipment and preparation,” he said. “One of the things that the person in this instance did, that was excellent, is they had the knowledge of how to make a shelter, and so a little bit of self-care always goes a long way.”

Magni and her dog were located safe this Friday morning.
