UPDATE, 9-6-24: The Cable Innovator has departed Victoria, B.C., bound for Sitka, and is estimated to arrive on September 9.

Original report

The cable repair ship bound for Southeast waters is currently in Canada, and should arrive by the end of the week.

GCI has confirmed that the Cable Innovator, a British-flagged cable-laying ship, is currently in Port Victoria, loading materials to repair the broken undersea fiber optic cable that has disrupted telecommunications and internet in Sitka since last Thursday.

GCI has confirmed no other details about the incident – neither the location of the break, or how it may have occurred. Information circulating on social media in Sitka about the involvement of a cruise ship is unsubstantiated.

GCI says it cannot be more specific about the incident until the Cable Innovator is on scene, and repairs are underway.
