The Sitka Assembly has advanced one candidate for the open municipal attorney job to a final review.

The city attorney, along with the municipal administrator, are the only two city staffers who work directly for the assembly. The attorney post has been vacant since Brian Hanson retired at the end of June after eight years in the role.

Rachel Jones, a former Sitka magistrate, and Anchorage deputy municipal attorney Cheryl McKay advanced to a second round of interviews last week. After interviewing both candidates over Zoom on Thursday (9-5-24), the assembly decided to advance only Jones to an in-person meeting scheduled for this week.

The assembly will hold a community meet-and-greet with Jones tonight (9-11-24) from 5-7 p.m. in rooms 2 and 3 at Harrigan Centennial Hall. Then, on Friday at 6 p.m., the assembly will convene for a special meeting to discuss next steps, including a potential hire offer for Jones.
