Choosing Respect: Sitkans march against violence

Hundreds of Sitkans, many of them students from Mt. Edgecumbe and Sitka high schools, marched through the city’s downtown today. It was part of the Choose Respect campaign, a statewide effort to address domestic violence and sexual assault in Alaska.

SEARHC to close Bill Brady Healing Center as sequester hits

The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, or SEARHC, is closing down the Bill Brady Healing Center, its residential drug and alcohol treatment program. The closure was announced Tuesday and comes after massive reductions in federal funding, also known as sequestration.

Community Health Aides provide first response in villages and smaller communities, often acting as medics by stabilizing patients before they’re transported to larger facilities. In a statement issued Tuesday, SEARHC chief executive Charles Clement tried to dispel rumors that the community health aide program is going away entirely.

“All in the Timing” takes the stage this weekend

Sitka Community Theater presents "All in the Timing," six one-act comedies by David Ives. The show features six directors, and about 18 actors. The comedies include chimps writing "Hamlet" in a lab, Philip Glass trying to buy a loaf of bread, and variations on the death of Leon Trotsky.
