At a fashion show in Sitka, residents have traded in the usual fabrics for more eccentric media. Maybe it’s a dress that’s all zippers. Or a suit made out of nautical charts. Or a purse composed of bicycle valve stems. In Milan or Paris, this might be called madness. In Sitka, it’s called wearable art.

Sitkans asked to conserve water next week

The city’s main water line from Blue Lake will be shut down between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on March 11 and 13. The interruption is happening because of construction on the new powerhouse at the Blue Lake dam.

Former principal charged with sexual assaults

A Sitka grand jury on Friday charged 54-year-old Joseph Robidou on six counts of felony sexual assault. He also faces an additional five misdemeanor charges for incidents that allegedly happened beginning last May and as recently as January. All of them involve other adults, and prosecutors say students at the school were not involved.

Rock swap catches heat at Assembly meeting

S&S General Contractors will remove about 25,000 cubic yards of rock near the city’s Jarvis Street Diesel Plant. Sitka already has agreements with S&S, and so, instead of getting bids from other companies, it simply amended its deal with S&S. The company will do the work in exchange for credit toward the $107,000 it owes the city on a quarry lease.

City approves Miami trip, busing, Sea Walk plans

Most of the tourism talk at Tuesday's Assembly meeting focused on the city’s Sea Walk project. Sitka has about $1.8 million to spend on the pathway from Crescent Harbor to the Sitka National Historical Park, and it's about to go looking for someone to build it.
