Assembly makes grants to Sitka nonprofits

The city had $100,000 to spend on nonprofit organizations. It opted to keep about $10,000 for emergencies. But most of the rest of it went to 12 different organizations.

Electric rate hike will help pay for Blue Lake dam

The Sitka Assembly took the first step toward raising electric rates last night. Sitka plans a 10 percent across-the-board increase. The goal is to help pay for big projects, especially the expansion of the Blue Lake dam.

Police arrest man who fell from grocer’s ceiling

Police say shortly after 11 p.m. Friday night, a 20-year-old Florida man climbed into the AC Lakeside grocery store ceiling above the men’s bathroom. But his plan was quickly foiled when he fell through that ceiling over an adjacent hallway, and fled through the store’s emergency exit.
