Woman hoisted from fishing vessel near Sitka

The woman, whose name was not released, was medevacked from the 109-foot fishing tender Tuxedni, which was in Tebenkof Bay on Kuiu Island. She had been complaining of severe abdominal distress, and was transported to Sitka where she was transferred to local EMS.

Help sought for service dog’s surgery bill

Karen Kluting has organized an online fundraiser for Willow’s medical bills, and has already raised nearly half the $3,000 necessary for the dog to get surgery. She’s also holding a bake sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Wells Fargo.

Sitka Superior Court Judge David George ruled on Thursday against supporters of a ballot initiative that would give citizens a vote on large land sales and leases. It is the latest development in a years-long saga that’s seen the case go all the way to the Alaska Supreme Court and back.

Airport foam lends a hand in Sitka asphalt blaze

Assistant Fire Chief Al Stevens says the fire began at the end of Granite Creek Road, where three containers of asphalt were being heated on trailers, for use on Baranof Street. One of the heaters fell off its bracket and landed near the tires of a trailer, which then caught fire.
