Assembly postpones decision on supplemental funds for Visit Sitka

Administrator: Problems in Sitka’s Electric Dept. are shared by utilities nationwide

Municipal administrator John Leach discusses the staffing shortage in the Sitka Electric Department: two journeyman lineman jobs, and two leadership jobs. He says pay is among the best in the region, but a per diem provision in union contracts is creating an incentive for workers to stay in temporary positions. Additionally, a widespread problem with utility bills has resulted in the city's investment in radio-frequency meter readings that reduce the chance for human error.
