The Sheldon Jackson Museum’s Native Artist Residency Program goes virtual

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum has sponsored the Alaska Native Artist Residency Program for over 30 years. Operating during the pandemic hasn't been easy, but they've adapted by going virtual to bring artist-in-residents to the community for talks and workshops. Tlingit artist Pamela Johnson began her residency on Oct. 1 and will spend the time working in the museum's gallery, teaching an eight-part regalia making class over Zoom and giving an artist talk.

Stuck in Sitka: Local students manage higher education at home

If it weren’t for the pandemic, she’d be studying her way through her Sophomore year at Yale University right now. Instead, she’s back in her hometown of Sitka living with her parents. The pandemic has disrupted all of our lives in some way or another, but it’s had a particularly dramatic impact on the lives of college students.

Tenakee Springs announces first known case of the coronavirus

The Chichagof Island community of Tenakee Springs has reported its first known case of the coronavirus. Mayor Dan Kennedy announced the new case on Tuesday. He identified the individual as a Tenakee Springs resident and said that state health officials have started the contact tracing process.

Climate scientist Zachary Brown has studied how warming and sea ice loss are impacting the polar regions. Now, he's shifted his work on climate change to education and activism. Brown and Sitka Conservation Society's Heather Bauscher speaks with KCAW's Morning Host Erin Fulton about a talk where Brown offers solutions to tackling climate change.
