Yakutat announces new case of COVID-19, possible community spread

The individual who tested positive took a test on Monday (9-21-20), according to a Yakutat Public Safety press release. It’s the second case that the community of around 600 people has reported in the last week. The two cases had no known contact with one another, and public health officials believe the new case is tied to community spread.

One-of-a-kind photo collection documents life in Angoon

Cyril George was a leader in the Beaver Clan of Angoon and was known for his contributions to local and regional politics. He was also known by those he was closest to as a photographer. When he died six years ago at the age of 92, he left behind a vast photo collection that is thought to be the largest ever made by someone who was Tlingit. George’s family recently donated those photos with the goal of making them available to the public.

Angoon extends emergency travel order until further notice

Angoon has extended its emergency travel order until further notice, in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the small, remote community. Angoon’s mayor originally issued the order two weeks ago, following the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the community and believes it’s important to keep it in place.
