The question of what we choose to honor with statues and memorials in this country has resurfaced in recent months. All over Alaska, people have been arguing for the removal of statues of European colonists because they represent a painful history of colonization for Alaska’s Native communities. And this week, conversation over a controversial memorial reemerged in Sitka.

Sitka police arrest suspect in attempted bank robbery

At around 10 a.m. this morning, a 32-year-old man walked into Alps Federal Credit Union on Halibut Point Rd. with what appeared to the tellers to be a firearm, according to Sitka Police Department Executive Assistant and Public Information Officer Serena Wild.

Sitka School Board president Elias Erickson resigns

The Sitka School Board is losing another member. Board president Elias Erickson submitted a letter of resignation on Monday (6-22-20). His resignation comes on the heels of fellow board member Dionne Brady-Howard’s, who left the board on June 10. Erickson says the back-to-back departures are a coincidence, and not connected.

Pelican welcomes first ferry in nearly nine months

The town of Pelican saw its first ferry in nearly nine months Wednesday afternoon. The Alaska Marine Highway System ferry LeConte sailed from Juneau to Pelican and back. The trip was originally scheduled for May, but unfinished repairs and the coronavirus pandemic delayed the vessel’s sailing.
