Coast Guard medevacs man from cruise ship

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Sitka evacuated a 23-year-old man from a cruise ship near Glacier Bay on Thursday. The man, a crewmember on the ship, had come down with symptoms that looked like appendicitis.

Thursday's "Bach's Lunch" from the Sitka Summer Music Festival featured the Catalyst Quartet, which has collaborated to arrange Bach's Goldberg Variations for string quartet. In the process, said festival artistic director Zuill Bailey, they've transformed the classic into "truly new music."

Assembly votes to raise pay for city workers

The Sitka Assembly gave final approval Tuesday night to an ordinance overhauling the pay-scale for non-union employees. The changes were prompted by a study that found some city salaries lagging well behind what is paid in other, similar communities.

HPR detour in effect Tuesday

Drivers on Halibut Point Road should be prepared for detours Tuesday, because of road work. Starting at 8 a.m. Halibut Point Road will be closed to outbound traffic from the roundabout to Kashevaroff Street. Drivers will be routed along Lake Street to Edgecumbe Drive. The detour will be in effect until Wednesday morning.

Sitka Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and Petersburg Republican Steven Samuelson will face off in November for the District 35 House seat. Kreiss-Tomkins would be returning for a second term, while Samuelson is hoping his third try at a house seat is successful.

Paddling to the party

Three canoes left Kake this morning; a week from now, they'll land in Juneau ten canoes strong. The week-long trek to Celebration 2014 is organized by the One People Canoe Society. Paddlers from Kake, Ketchikan and Wrangell will be joined by canoes from Sitka, Angoon, Hoonah, Yakutat and Haines. So what prompts people to pick up a paddle? It's about "getting back to their roots," says Alicia Chilton, who is skippering the Wrangell canoe. "Or maybe finding them."
