Sitka herring fishery could open as soon as Thursday

It’s herring time. The multi-million dollar Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery could open as early as the end of this week. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has announced that as of 8 a.m. Thursday, the fishery will be placed on two-hour notice.

Crossing swords: Workshop on stage combat for all ages

Ira Snelling talks about his upcoming stage combat workshop, to be held March 23 and 24, for students in the 5th grade and older. The class will teach stage punches, grabs and throws, as well as sword play, with techniques "that from one angle looks really dangerous and really believable, but actually is very, very safe," Snelling said.

Sitka's historic Cable House, home of Raven Radio, is older than the medium it hosts...but just barely. The Cable House was built in 1907-8 as part of the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System. DNR proposes Nakwasina Sound land sale

The proposed sale is about eight miles north of downtown. It includes 485 acres of land on the west side of Lisianski Peninsula, near Dog Point. The land is off Sitka’s road system, about three miles north of the Starrigavan ferry terminal by water.

At its heart, the Affordable Care Act has a simple premise: Americans who lack health insurance should be able to go online and pick a plan, and if their income falls beneath a certain threshold, then the federal government will cover part of the cost.
