Sitka Artisans Market: Where food, art, and vintage meet

Ellen Lueders is helping organize the first-ever "Rusty Raven Vintage Holiday Market," which will open in the Yaw Art Building, this Friday-Sunday in conjunction with the Sitka Artisans Market (Allen Hall, 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday December 2, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday). Landslide destroys Starrigavan restoration projects

High rainfall this month is being blamed for a major landslide near Sitka. The US Forest Service reports that a 100-acre slide came down in the Starrigavan Valley, about ten miles from town. The slide, and water damage to an ATV trail in the valley and other hiking trails elsewhere in Sitka -- all add up to a tough month for the agency.

Teachers, technology in spotlight as board closes $1.5-million budget gap

The Sitka School district appears headed for some budget cuts next year. This was the message Monday night (2-24-14) at a public hearing held at Pacific High School. The board has offered no specific cuts, yet. The hearing was one of several planned to help them take the public’s temperature on district programs in the arts and technology.
