The Sitka business community wants to quantify the economic impact of the internet outage. A survey has been circulating since September, and will close before Thanksgiving. Organizers hope the results will help Sitka advocate for a more robust connection, or at least redundancy.

Winter is the time when most Sitkans turn their attention to other pursuits besides fishing, but not the members of the local Fish & Game Advisory Committee. During November and December, the local Fish & Game Advisory Committee considers hunkers down with a thick book of proposals for changes in the management in Southeast’s fisheries. Over the last two weeks, they’ve focused exclusively on herring.
Despite permitting delays, Sitka officials break ground on new marine haulout

Sitka has ceremonially broken ground on a new marine haulout at its industrial park. The actual groundbreaking has been held up by environmental permitting, but city officials are optimistic that the facility will be hauling boats out of the water next spring.

Although winter snuck up on Sitka this year, it's not too late to prepare for seasonal emergencies, primarily related to weather. Officials recommend preparing an emergency kit to support your household for 72 hours, in the event of power failure. You should also know how to turn off the water to your home in the event a pipe bursts.
