Alaska’s lucrative herring fisheries were born in the 1950s, when Japan’s domestic herring industry all but died out. But Japanese herring are making a comeback now, thanks to a government-sponsored hatchery program that has rebuilt stocks, and most importantly, changed attitudes about hatchery-produced herring in a country that prizes its seafood above just about everything else. Buyers vie for hatchery herring in Otaru’s ‘flash’ auction

KCAW’s Katherine Rose continues her assignment in Japan this week, where she’s looking into the industry and culture of herring. Today, Rose tracks the herring to an early-morning wholesale auction in the city of Otaru, where, in a lightning-fast process that lasts under four minutes, buyers stake their claim to thousands of boxes of hatchery-produced herring – all of which will be processed and retailed in Japan.
