Sitka ‘Indian Village’ recognized as endangered historic place

Sitka’s "Indian Village" was once home to over forty Lingít clan houses. Today, only eight of those are still standing, and even fewer serve as active clan houses. Now, the area has been recognized as one of 11 endangered historic places in the US. Point House repatriation in Sitka marks new chapter for Kiks.ádi Clan

It’s not an uncommon story for cultural artifacts, or tribal property  to go missing or fall into the wrong hands. A less common story? For those objects to be returned. After 75 years, family keeps Sitka Sentinel running

The Sitka Sentinel celebrated its 75th anniversary last year without much fanfare. As many newspapers in big cities have folded or turned into online only operations, the Sentinel has continued publishing five issues a week. The paper is owned and edited by Thad and Sandy Poulson, journalist who arrived in 1969 and are determined to keep the press running. Read More
